Scale model of a Mesta Machine 40x60in reversing engine cylinder.

"For driving reversing rolling mills, such as blooming mills, slabbing mills, universal mills, etc., it has been demonstrated that neither the Corliss valve gear nor, indeed, any other valve gear will give as good results as the piston-valve type.  It has also been demonstrated that the vertical, or horizontal-vertical, is not as well adapted for reversing mills as the horizontal engine.  For these reasons we build all our reversing engines of the horizontal type, and equip them with the piston-valve gear.

The bed-plates and all stationary parts are substantially and massively built to absorb the shocks due to reversing.  The highest grade of material is used in the construction of the engine.  Particularly is this the case of the moving parts; for they must be made as light as possible and still have a great factor of safety.  When it is considered that these engines are often run at a piston speed of 1500 feet per minute, and that they are reversed several times per minute, the reason for the design is apparent.  In the larger sizes the pistons are made of the highest grade of cast-steel, and the piston rods of hollow forged steel.  The rods extend through the back heads and are supported on shoes which carry the pistons entirely free of the cylinder."  Mesta Catalogue B - 1904.
