The Wm H. Page Monarch boiler is designed for burning any kind of fuel; hard or soft coal, wood, gas, or oil.
Heat from the burning fuel transfers through the walls of integral tubes, boiling water to create steam. The steam produced would typically be used for heating a large building.
The Monarch model S-60-20 was rated for 29,000 square feet of steam (based on anthracite coal of 12,500 B.t.u.), and would require a 90ft tall chimney.
It was recommended (in the 1929 Wm H. Page catalog) to blanket the boiler with a substantial covering of asbestos, to the tune of six pounds of asbestos cement to the square foot of the surface to be covered, 1 1/4 inches thick.
Imagine your layout with one or more of these boilers on a flatcar headed from your boiler-manufacturing plant to an industrial (or governmental) customer facility.
