"Hugh Jass Pipe and Tube Company of McKeesport Pennsylvania was incorporated in 1896.  Hubert Baleen Jass III poured his meager life savings and copious riverboat gambling winnings into a risky land purchase on the banks of the Youghiogheny river. There he began building an iron and steel foundry the likes of which had not been seen in western Pennsylvania before nor since.

Originally the firm produced handrails and plumbing fixtures for navy vessels. During both world wars HJP&T produced a number of defense articles for the US war effort, including high-tech aluminum forgings and stampings used in military tanks and aircraft.

At the peak of success in 1967 the firm employed more than forty thousand mill workers and processed an annual thirty million tons of iron and bauxite ore into steel and aluminum products for the burgeoning municipal playground equipment industry.

The firm began to fall on hard times in the early 1980s due to anticompetitive foreign steel dumping practices and in 1992 the doors were shuttered forever.  The mills lay decaying for twenty years when in 2012 the property was purchased by a major Halloween products retailer who converted the facilities into wholesale warehouses for the thriving once-yearly October holiday costume and confections market."  -Pittsburgh Press, Dec 23 2015.

Scale model of a massive aluminum engine exhaust manifold casting. Unfortunately the design of the engine for which this manifold was produced has been lost to history but it certainly would have been a sight to watch that beast fire up on a cold winter morning.

Imagine one of your flatcars hauling this unique and historic piece around as an open freight load. Let your imagination run wild; we did.
