Magneto-inertial fusion reactor cores combine magnetic and inertial confinement fusion in a compact low-cost package. 
Fusion reactors join two hydrogen nuclei under immense pressure and temperature to create a larger helium nucleus and in the process release prodigious amounts of energy.  Most common designs use so-called "heavy water" containing the one-and two neutron isotopes of hydrogen (deuterium and tritium) as fuel, which are inexpensive and prevalent in seawater.   Fusion reactors produce very little radioactive waste.  
This particular reactor design derives electrical energy directly from the motion of charged plasma within the reactor, and does not require an intermediary working fluid such as steam.
