A firebox boiler passes burning gases through tubes running through a sealed tank of water. Heat transfers through the walls of the tubes, boiling the water to create steam.

This particular boiler was manufactured to burn coal as fuel. The steam produced would be used for manufacturing processes, or to heat a building.

Boiler number 590 is rated for 15-150lb steam pressures, 35,000 sqft steam radiation, 56,000 sqft water radiation, and produces a power output of 8.4 million BTU/hr (2.5MW). Prototype shipping weight is 31,700lbs.

From a contemporary Kewanee flyer:

In this series we maintain the same high standard of material and workmanship that characterizes all KEWANEE products; plates, bracing, stay-bolting, riveting are heavy for long life and endurance and are not to the minimum limit of pressure requirements.

Large steam space and disengaging area to insure steady water line and dry steam; proper arrangement of tubes to allow free circulation; high fireboxes for good combustion when burning coal or oil; large water content; proper ratio grate surface to heating surface; correct arrangement of heating surface to absorb the heat; all these, that make for economy and efficiency, are embodied in the design, to assure maximum amount of steam delivered for a minimum quantity of fuel burned.

Imagine your layout with one or more of these boilers on a flatcar headed from your boiler-manufacturing plant to an industrial (or governmental) customer facility. Triangular rear stand is easily and quickly attached by applying a drop of CA glue and inserting into the slot under the boiler.
